Design: Handset manufacturers awarding bold pastel colours to their smartphones has been a huge trend. Nokia did a brilliant job with the N8 a couple of years ago. The trend continued with its latest Lumia range. For Apple, the introduction of colour to its phone is a recent development. And it has done a brilliant job.
In the past, I have had a chance to play around with the colourful flagship smartphones from Nokia. The 'green' variant of the iPhone 5c has a smooth finish with a comfortable grip. Apple has replaced the aluminum casing with a polycarbonate plastic back in a glossy finish which attracts smudges.
Controls are placed at the same location-power key on the top, volume controls and the silent key on the left. There is a 3.5mm headphone jack as well as a lightning port at the bottom. The iPhone 5c continues to have a 4 inch display with 630 x 1136 pixels. But is slightly bigger in terms of the dimension. While the iPhone 5 was sleek at 7.6mm, the iPhone 5c is thick at 9mm and weighs 20 grams more.
Performance: There iPhone 5c comes with the same innards as the iPhone 5 along with an A6 chip. It runs on iOS 7. Configuring the device took a few minutes. I was able to restore all my contacts using my Apple account. There was no difference in the performance (when compared to the iPhone 5.) Apps opened at the same speed.
The signal reception is certainly impressive compared to most smartphones . There were fewer call-drops too. Sound quality while playing games, music and videos over a speaker were loud and clear. The app store loaded quickly and there was no lag in browsing the web. Even after long gaming sessions, the device didn't heat up.
Camera: Carried over from the iPhone 5, the 5s features an 8MP iSight camera. Other smartphones incorporate 13MP and more. Images captured from this phone are crisp and look natural. It does only an average job in low light conditions and isn't as good as the Nokia Lumia 1020 and the LG G2. But images offered great detail when shot in well lit scenarios.
Battery: Where most of the Android or Windows smartphones fails to last us a day, a full charge lasted me an entire day. I was in fact left with 20 per cent battery around 10pm.
'C' does not stand for cheap: Technically, the iPhone 5c replaced last year's flagship, iPhone 5. Some complained that the iPhone 5c is listed for $99 under contract. But the unlocked version is available for $549+ taxes, which comes out to approximately Rs 35,000. In comparison to the unlocked version, it is priced slightly higher at Rs 41,900. However, under the buyback scheme, it is now available for Rs 28,900.
