Bag it or Junk it: Only die-hard BlackBerry fans will upgrade to this smartphone.
BlackBerry might be a sinking boat, but this hasn't discouraged the company from coming out with another flagship smartphone. Here is the Z30, the first phablet ever from the Canadian smartphone maker.
Design: The BlackBerry Z30 has a 5-inch super AMOLED responsive glass display that blends beautifully into its edges. But its 295ppi resolution is not a shade on the Samsung Galaxy Note 3's 441ppi. Plus, it looks a lot like the HTC One, except for the woven carbon fiber back cover picked up from the BlackBerry Q10. The phone now has four microphones, two of which are visible on the right panel. The micro-USB and micro-HDMI ports are on the left side. All this has been packed into a sturdy 9.4mm frame. Overall, the design is quite impressive.
Performance: The BlackBerry 10 interface has been tweaked further with the 10.2 update that is seen on the Z30. Now, there is a Priority Hub that keeps track of usage patterns and stocks only relevant notifications. The best feature on the Z30 is that notification appears on the top when in an app. For instance, while watching videos, email and text message notification along with the sender's name appeared on the top and disappeared. Then the all-new Natural Sound technology enhances audio during BBM voice and video calls. This feature can work on normal calls too, but with support from the carrier. We did not experience any bugs and the phone ran most apps smoothly without any lag thanks to the new 1.7GHz dual-core processor with 2GB RAM. The multitasking on the BB 10 operating system, where one can run eight apps in the background is the best.
Camera: Everyone, except BlackBerry, is betting big time on the camera optics in smartphones. The company still continues to have an 8MP sensor which is good for daylight photography, but lacks in low light. Neither are there any camera settings to play around with. Shooting scenes included auto, action, whiteboard, night and beach or snow. There is a timeshift feature that captures milliseconds before the image is being captured, allowing to save the best face.
Battery: BlackBerry has always offered one of the best battery backups. But things changed with the new devices on BB10 operating system. The non-removable 2880 mAh battery on this smartphone continued to power up the device for over a day and a half on heavy usage.
